Who better to ask for inspiration than our very own design team? This week, we hear from Monarch kitchen and bath designer Marion Cuddie.
“For 2019, I see a re-appreciation for the galley kitchen,” says Marion.
With home and condo prices across the GTA remaining steady, new homebuyers are forced to choose homes that are smaller than the generation before them.
“Galley kitchens respond to a desire to de-clutter our lives and works for both the down-sizers and urban homeowners who may have a smaller footprint to work with.”
“In galley kitchen renovations, the main modification seems to be eliminating the small eat-in area and using this space for the addition of a customized appliance like a built-in coffeemaker or wine fridge, as well as creating a servery area.”
Galley Kitchen Design Tips
- Limit the use of upper cabinetry to create a more open, less cavernous feel
- Use glossy tiles or surfaces to brighten the space and reflect the natural light
- Use decorative light fixtures on the ceiling to bring the space together
- Maximize counter space by incorporating as many built-in items as possible
- Choose smaller appliances that don’t overwhelm the space
